In Florida’s conservation community, few individuals exemplify the fusion of science, storytelling, and public engagement as effectively as Benji Studt. As the leader of the Outreach and Science Communication team at Palm Beach County Environmental Resources Management (ERM), Benji has become a trusted voice in environmental education—bringing clarity, creativity, and connection to some of the state’s most urgent ecological conversations. Whether behind the camera, at a public meeting, or guiding a field project, Benji is deeply committed to making Florida’s natural wonders accessible and meaningful to the public. His work bridges the gap between complex environmental science and everyday understanding, empowering people to care, learn, and take action.

Championing Transparency During the 2024 State Parks Controversy
In 2024, development proposals—including golf courses at Jonathan Dickinson State Park and pickleball courts and hotels at other state parks across Florida—sparked widespread concern among environmentalists and the public. Benji played a pivotal role in informing the community about the potential ecological impacts of this proposal. Through a series of informative videos and digital communications, he highlighted how such developments could disrupt sensitive habitats and set concerning precedents for state lands. His efforts were instrumental in galvanizing public discourse and advocating for the preservation of Florida’s treasured natural spaces.

Recognized Conservation Communicator
Benji’s dedication to environmental education and outreach has not gone unnoticed. In 2022, the Florida Wildlife Federation honored him with the Conservation Communicator of the Year award—one of the organization’s highest recognitions for individuals who excel in connecting people with Florida’s natural world.
What set Benji apart was not only his knowledge of ecological issues, but his unique talent for making science accessible and engaging across platforms. Whether through short-form videos, public presentations, or educational social media campaigns, Benji has a gift for translating complex environmental topics into stories that stick. His ability to meet people where they are—whether they’re lifelong conservationists or learning about Florida’s ecosystems for the first time—makes him a powerful force in shaping public understanding and support for conservation.

Through his work with Palm Beach County ERM and collaborative efforts with local and statewide organizations, Benji continues to inspire action and foster a deeper appreciation for the wild spaces and species that make Florida unique.
Advocating for Gopher Tortoise Conservation
Benji has been a staunch advocate for the gopher tortoise, a keystone species in Florida’s ecosystems. Under his guidance, ERM established the first waif tortoise relocation site in South Florida at Winding Waters Natural Area. This initiative provides displaced tortoises with a safe habitat, ensuring their survival and the continued health of the ecosystems they support.
Engaging Communities Through Storytelling
Beyond his conservation efforts, Benji is a gifted storyteller and photographer. His work has been featured in various media outlets, including “Wild Palm Beaches” and “Hooked on the Palm Beaches”, where he showcases the region’s biodiversity and the importance of environmental stewardship.
Through his multifaceted approach to conservation by combining science, communication, and community engagement, Benji Studt continues to inspire and mobilize efforts to preserve Florida’s rich natural heritage for generations to come.
