Wildlife Programs by the Florida Wildlife Federation

Florida panthers, manatees, and black bears are just a few examples of the wonderful wildlife that call our state home. But the challenges of an ever-growing human population, development, pollution, and warming temperatures must be addressed if we are to save them.

Protecting Florida’s Wildlife since 1936

Florida’s extraordinary wildlife depends on healthy, connected ecosystems to survive. Yet habitat loss and environmental stressors continue to threaten the wild spaces our native species need.

The Florida Wildlife Federation leads efforts to protect and restore these habitats so wildlife can thrive. We advocate for land conservation programs like Florida Forever and promote the use of conservation easements to safeguard critical corridors and ecosystems. We also champion wildlife crossings that reconnect fragmented habitats, helping animals move safely across our state.

Beyond large-scale conservation, FWF also empowers Floridians to make a difference in their own backyards. Through our Gardening for Wildlife program, residents can create habitat for pollinators, birds, and other species, while displaying a certified garden sign that shows their commitment to conservation. We also provide educational gopher tortoise signs to communities and parks across the state, helping raise awareness about this keystone species and the many animals that rely on its burrows.

Since 1936, FWF has been at the forefront of wildlife conservation in Florida, helping secure millions of acres of protected lands and waters. Today, we continue that legacy—working to ensure a future where Florida’s remarkable wildlife not only survives, but flourishes for generations to come.

Florida Panther

The Florida panther (Puma concolor couguar) is one of the most endangered mammals in the U.S. We work to protect its habitat, expand wildlife corridors, and advocate for safe crossings to reduce vehicle mortality and ensure this remarkable species survives.

Florida Black Bear

ThThe Florida black bear (Ursus americanus floridanus) is the state’s only bear species. With development fragmenting habitat and increasing encounters, we promote coexistence strategies and safeguard wild lands.

Florida Manatee

The Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus), an iconic marine mammal, relies on clean water and healthy habitats for survival. We advocate for strong water quality standards and habitat conservation to protect these gentle giants.

Florida Scrub-Jay

The Florida scrub-jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens), Florida’s only endemic bird, depends on rare, fire-maintained scrub habitat. We work to protect these fragile ecosystems to secure a future for the species and other scrub-dependent wildlife.

Gopher Tortoise

The gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) digs burrows that provide shelter for more than 350 other species. We protect tortoise habitat while raising awareness through conservation advocacy and educational signage.
