I had the opportunity to “Get Outside with FWF in November, when we can choose a day to enjoy the great outdoors and engage with nature. This time, I ventured to the scenic East River in St. Marks, Florida, where I cast my lines and experienced the rich biodiversity of the coastal waters in Wakulla County.

My husband guided my stepson and I for a fun-filled day of fishing. The weather was perfect—sunny skies and mild temperatures set the stage for an unforgettable outing.

A Bountiful Catch

The fishing was nothing short of exciting, with a variety of species biting throughout the day. We pulled in a mix of fish, including sheepshead, redfish, trout, and even the elusive pufferfish. The East River didn’t let us down and proved to be a rich fishing spot, where a little patience and skill paid off in big rewards throughout the day.

One of the highlights of the day was the sheepshead, a popular catch among local fishermen for its delicious taste and challenging fight. The redfish also made an appearance, offering a thrilling challenge with its powerful pull. We also had some fun with the pufferfish, a unique and entertaining catch, as well as grunts, which added variety to the day’s haul.

A Day of Connection with Nature

Beyond fishing, the event provided an opportunity for us to connect with each other and the natural world. As always, our mission to promote environmental awareness and conservation was at the forefront. We were reminded of the importance of preserving Florida’s delicate ecosystems, not just for the enjoyment of activities like fishing, but for the health of the species and habitats that rely on them.

This trip to St. Marks was a powerful reminder of the importance of spending time outdoors and appreciating the beauty of Florida’s natural spaces. With the support of community members and local partners, the Florida Wildlife Federation remains dedicated to advocating for the preservation of these habitats, ensuring they stay vibrant and accessible for future generations.
